BRIDGES INSTEAD OF WALLS: THE ASIA-EUROPE MEETING (ASEM) 2020 IN PHNOM PENH

When the European and Asian political leaders met in 2016 the host country Mongolia built a village for them. A symbol of the connections between the two continents and how important a personal dialogue is. This year, Cambodia will have the opportunity to shine on the global stage as the host of the 13th Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM). The summit will be one of the biggest and most prestigious political events in Cambodia’s contemporary history. It could portray itself as an open, multilateral and modern country, which is in particular important when we consider that the EU just partially withdrew the trade preferences for Cambodia after a decline in democracy under the “Everything but Arms” scheme for least developed countries.
